How the calculation works

  1. Add tax: sales tax = price before tax × rate. Price with tax = price before tax + sales tax.
  2. Remove tax: price before tax = price with tax × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). Sales tax = price with tax − price before tax.
  3. Amounts are rounded to the nearest paisa.

Example at a 15% rate: Rs 2,300 including tax is Rs 2,300 × 100 ÷ 115 = Rs 2,000 before tax, so the sales tax is Rs 300.

Goods or services: who sets the rate?

Sales tax on goods is charged under the Sales Tax Act 1990 and collected by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Since 2010 the provinces charge sales tax on services through their own revenue authorities: the Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA), Sindh Revenue Board (SRB), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Revenue Authority (KPRA) and Balochistan Revenue Authority (BRA). Services in Islamabad are taxed by FBR under the ICT (Tax on Services) Ordinance 2001.

The list in the calculator shows the standard rate for each, with a link to the official source and the date we last checked it. Specific goods and services can have other rates, so check the schedule that applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Multiply the price before tax by the rate, then add the result to the price. For example, at a 15% rate, Rs 1,000 + Rs 150 sales tax = Rs 1,150. Choose “Add tax” and the calculator does this for you.

How do I remove sales tax from a price that already includes it?

Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. For example, at a 15% rate, Rs 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = Rs 1,000 before tax, so the tax inside the price is Rs 150. Do not simply take 15% off Rs 1,150, because that gives the wrong answer. Choose “Remove tax” to do it correctly.

Which rate should I use?

Sales tax on goods is a federal tax collected by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Sales tax on services is charged by the province where the service is provided (PRA in Punjab, SRB in Sindh, KPRA in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, BRA in Balochistan) or, in Islamabad, by FBR. The list on this page shows each standard rate with a link to its official source.

Are these the only rates?

No. The list shows standard rates only. Some goods and services are taxed at reduced, higher or fixed rates or are exempt, and buyers who are not registered or not active taxpayers can be charged further tax on goods under section 3(1A) of the Sales Tax Act 1990. If your rate is different, choose “Custom rate” and enter it.

How up to date are the rates?

We check each rate against the official source after every federal and provincial budget and when the law changes. The date of the last check is shown under the list, with a link to each source.

Is anything I type stored?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and does not save or send the amounts you enter.

Estimate only. This calculator uses standard rates. It does not cover reduced, higher, fixed or exempt rates, further tax, withholding or federal excise duty. Check the rate that applies to your goods or services with your tax adviser or the revenue authority you are registered with.
